This affecting memoir focuses on the lives of two women, Dotey and  her daughter Jess,set in small small town Devonshire in the 1960s, where domestic violence was not a topic ever discussed. There are no refuges or support groups and the police refuse to attend when Jess's mother Dotey is attacked by her father Jack, saying they cannot interfere between husband and wife.
