Portsmouth - 16 Days of Action

Portsmouth were awarded White Ribbon City status last year. This year, they are having some really great events starting on the 25th of November. A press releas from the chair of the White Ribbon Group reads as follows. '

'We will start out 16 days of action against domestic abuse with a Reclaim The Night march. Last year our march was attended by over 550 women men and children from Portsmouth and surrounding areas in opposition of violence against women, this year we are hoping we can reach 1000 marchers from the city! The march will be led by Batala a samba drumming group, who joined us last year and made the spirit of the march uplifting! We will march through some of the main central streets of Portsmouth and end in the guildhall square for a rally of music and words,we have 2 local singers who will be singing because of you by Kelly Clarkson, pearl by Katie Perry and not yet decided but either superwoman by Alicia Keys or survivor by Gloria Gaynor! Paul Edmonson Jones the lead in the city for violence against women will be talking for us at the guildhall along with myself and the lord mayor!

During the 16 days Portsmouth football club will be wearing white ribbons and supporting the blow the whistle campaign for the 3rd year running, they have also agreed to do a bucket collection for us and all monies raised will be given to families who have witnessed or who are experiencing domestic abuse in the city!
David Antony hairdressers of the year2011 will also be wearing white ribbons during the 16 days, and will be holding a bucket collection! We are a non profit organisation and all monies raised is purely for families of violence,we are able to put all our events on via sponsorship!

We are ending the 16 days with a comedy night and disco,we will be joined by Sarah Ruffell a local comedian who has played at the Edinburgh festival, and during the evening we will be showing the clip from you tube called 'I am man, reading a poem'

An article about these activities was featured in portsmouthnews.tv at http://www.portsmouthnews.tv/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4878:portsmouth-white-ribbon-celebrates-10-years-of-saying-no-to-violence-against-women&catid=34:front-page-news
Portsmouth White Ribbon group will be celebrating their 10th year on 25th November with their annual ‘Reclaim the night’ March.

Reclaim the Night is a symbolic march in which women and men take to the streets to enable women to reclaim the streets at night in safety.

The march begins at 7.30 at the Spinnaker Tower and ends with a powerful closing rally in the Guildhall Square with music and speeches.

Numbers attending the March have risen year on year, with over 500 men, women and children attending last year’s Reclaim the Night. Hundreds of participants are expected to take part this year.

Kirsty Dillon, star of ITV’s Midsomer Murders, who is an active supporter of Portsmouth’s White Ribbon campaign said, “Women should be able to walk without fear for their safety on any night of the year, of course, but we all know that doesn’t happen. Women are not only in danger on the streets, they are often in danger from violence in their own homes, and the White Ribbon campaign exists to raise awareness of exactly that.”

Portsmouth has played an active part in the international White Ribbon campaign for the last ten years. In 2010, Leader of the Council, Gerald Vernon-Jackson led a local ceremony to accept the status of ‘White Ribbon City’ for Portsmouth, in recognition of the local community’s response to violence against women.

The March is part of the broader White Ribbon publicity campaign, which  encourages local men across the city to speak out and take a pledge:  “never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.”

The campaign culminates on White Ribbon Day (25 November) each year, when men and women across Portsmouth are called to wear a white ribbon or wristband as a visual symbol of their commitment and pledge.

Players from Portsmouth Football Club are long standing supporters of the campaign and will be joining White Ribbon to take the pledge on 17th November. Several team members will take the pledge as a public gesture of the Club’s support for the campaign.

In addition to the March, Portsmouth’s White Ribbon group is also organising a Comedy Night benefit at the Wedgewood Rooms on Thursday 8th December. Tickets are on sale now at £10 each, and organisers are hoping that local businesses and groups will consider the night as an alternative to their usual Christmas celebrations.

Chair of the White Ribbon Group, Kirsty Mellor said, “We really want to put the ‘fun’ in ‘fundraising’ this year! The Comedy Night will be a perfect Christmas night out for everyone, and we’re hoping it will put an even bigger smile on people’s faces to know that all profits from the night will be going to local services that support women experiencing violence.”

She continued, “In 2011, it is appalling that women are still experiencing violence on the streets and in their homes, but I’m so proud to come from a city that stands against this. Every year the men and women of Portsmouth have joined us to say this must stop. Real men don’t hurt women, they stand alongside them pledging never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.”

Leeds City Council - Men, Take the Pledge and Wrap a Tree!

Leeds City Council Domestic Violence Team are coordinating a collective art project, wrapping trees around Leeds in white ribbon.

We were the first city in England to achieve White Ribbon City status in November 2010. To celebrate our first year, we want everyone in Leeds to know that we are a White Ribbon City and what that means.

The White Ribbon Campaign is an international campaign by men to end violence against women. The campaign starts from the premise that most men are not violent to women.  Men involved in the campaign are asked to pledge that they will not commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Men can record their pledge online at: http://www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk/

As a White Ribbon City, we are committed to positively involving men to end violence against women.  Our White Ribbon Working Group will be actively coordinating the involvement of other men through their professional and personal networks.

As this is a campaign about gender and violence, it is important that the trees are wrapped by men who want to end violence against women.

Violence Against Women is defined as:

“Any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women and children  including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.”

As we ask men from businesses, clubs, networks and public sector organisations to demonstrate their support for the campaign we will be talking about why we all want to end violence against women.

It is our aim to wrap at least 1,000 trees in Leeds in white ribbon and tell the country and the world why Leeds is a White Ribbon City.

Buying Ribbon for the 2011 Collective Art Project

As part of the art project you must source your own ribbon.  Below are links to ribbon suppliers found through a Google search.

Your choice of ribbon is part of what you contribute to the art project as a whole. We have no preference whatsoever. We would suggest a wide white ribbon (70mm or wider) for wrapping the trunks of trees as it will take less time and effort to cover the trunk completely.

However, do not feel that it has to be a ribbon to wrap the tree – anything that looks like ribbon is fine.  You could use white fabric strips, non adhesive white tape, or even rolls of white plastic bin liners – be creative!

Leeds White Ribbon Campaign 2011 from Leeds City Council on Vimeo.

East Staffordshire Borough Council will be hosting its 3rd White Ribbon campaign event on Saturday 26th November

Burton Albion Football Club is once again teaming up with East Staffordshire Borough Council to raise awareness of the White Ribbon campaign to end domestic violence.
This year as part of the WRC’s ‘Blow the Whistle on Violence’ campaign, East Staffordshire Borough Council has teamed back up with Burton Albion to hold an awareness day at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday 26th November as the Brewers take on AFC Wimbledon at home.
Volunteers from East Staffordshire Borough Council and domestic violence partners will be at the stadium on the day selling White Ribbons, and – if needed – handing out information on local domestic violence helplines.
Meanwhile the players will spend a few minutes warming up before the game in the White ribbon t-shirts to help promote the campaign and manager Paul Peschisolido and his playing staff will be wearing White Ribbon buttons as part of their pledge never to ‘commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women’.
At the end of the match up to 200 white balloons will be released into the air to represent each child in East Staffordshire that so far this year has been affected in some way by Domestic Abuse, whether being a victim or witnessing the violence of a parent/carer.
Councillor David Leese, Deputy Leader for Partnerships, said: “East Staffordshire is proud to have White Ribbon town status and the Council continues to do what it can to raise awareness of the support and help available to victims of domestic violence.
“We are very grateful to all the players and staff at Burton Albion for their support once again, even if our message reaches just one victim who manages to get help, or one offender who sees the error of their ways, then it is worth it.”
Burton Albion Manager Paul Peschisolido, said: “We are very happy to team up with East Staffordshire Borough Council to give our full backing to the White Ribbon Campaign.
“This is a campaign which the whole squad is behind and we will be showing our support when we play AFC Wimbledon later this month.”

White Ribbon Campaign UK were pleased that East Staffordshire Borough Council became a White Ribbon Authority on 16th September 2010.

Gillette Four Nations teams have pledged their support to the White Ribbon Campaign

Players from all four Gillette Four Nations teams have pledged their support to the White Ribbon campaign, an international initiative to raise awareness about domestic violence issues.

The campaign received a timely boost ahead of tomorrow’s Gillette Four Nations double header at Wembley when England second row Jamie Jones-Buchanan, New Zealand hooker Thomas Leuluai and Australia scrum-half Johnathan Thurston turned out to give their backing to the campaign which encourages men to pledge never to commit violence against a woman and to always condemn violent behaviour

“As Rugby League players and sportsmen we act as role models for society, and it is our responsibility to show that we condemn violence in any form. I am proud to be a part of the White Ribbon campaign.” said Jones-Buchanan.

“When playing, if a player is violent it damages the whole team, and in life to ignore violence when we know it exists damages all of society.

“I wholeheartedly support the important work of the White Ribbon Campaign to involve men in pledging never to commit violence against women, never to excuse violence against women, and never to remain silent about violence against women, and I ask that all supporters of the game also pledge their support.”

On ‘White Ribbon Day’- Friday November 25 – thousands of men in the UK will be undertaking sponsored silences, educational talks, signing the White Ribbon pledge and undertaking high heeled walks to draw attention to the issue.

The White Ribbon Campaign operates in 50 countries around the world, and has very strong branches in the UK, Australia and New Zealand
